Inter Milan secures their 20th Serie A championship by defeating AC Milan

Inter Milan emerged victorious in the city derby against AC Milan, securing a 2-1 win on Monday and claiming the prestigious Serie A title. This remarkable achievement marks the 20th time that Inter Milan has triumphed and lifted the trophy throughout its illustrious history.

Inter took the lead with goals from Francesco Acerbi and Marcus Thuram before Fikayo Tomori scored for AC Milan in the 80th minute. Both teams had a player sent off towards the end of the game in a heated match.

Inter successfully secured the result until the end, and when the final whistle blew, they had accumulated an unbeatable 86 points, a comfortable 17 points ahead of Milan with five games remaining in the season.

Inter captain Lautaro Martínez expressed his thoughts, saying, “I gathered the team and told them, ‘We find ourselves in an unprecedented situation.’ We needed to seize this opportunity because, just look around, the entire stadium belongs to us now.”

As the game concluded, a jubilant Martinez and his teammate Federico Dimarco climbed on top of the goal frame at San Siro, radiating with joy.

The stands erupted with flares and fireworks, while the Inter players celebrated exuberantly in front of their devoted fans. A banner was unveiled, proudly stating in Italian: “Tell it to the Madonnina, who are the champions and who the crybabies.”

The Madonnina refers to the statue atop Milan’s cathedral, which overlooks the city and lends its name to the derby.

Simone Inzaghi, after winning eight other trophies, claimed his first league title as a coach.

“Winning the league with five matches remaining, practically securing it with nine matches left, especially in a derby where Milan was the home team, is an experience that will forever stay with us,” Inzaghi expressed.

“Every individual made a significant contribution to help us achieve goals like this.”

Inter’s previous league triumph came in the 2020-21 season, but they were unable to replicate that success in the following two years, witnessing Milan and Napoli claim the titles in 2021-22 and 2022-23, respectively.
